Musical ability isn't something that tends to crop up in conversation very often. Sure, we talk about singles and albums and bands and such, but in terms of actually playing a musical instrument or being able to read music, that's not something I could judge of many of my friends. I wonder, upon being told that someone played an instrument, could you tell which one it was? In a rare fleeting mention of musical instruments last year and I revealing my main weapon of skill, someone commented,
"Yeah, you seem like the [insertinstrument] type."
For this reason, I'd be interested to see if you could guess correctly which instrument I speak of (though some readers may already know), and what does the choice of instrument say about a person?
Again, it often comes down to avaliability of opportunities and the type of person someone is. I would not describe myself as particulary musically inclined. I'd like to be able to play music properly, but despite over seven years of private music tution for three different musical instruments, it's shameful how little I have to show for that today.
Now, having vowed to just play a few tunes every now and again, I haven't touched my main instrument since I stopped having lessons. I looked at a simple piece of music the other day, and I realised, I have forgotten what the notes mean. I don't know B from F#; I wouldn't be able to tell the key; I doubt I could even place my hands appropriately. People say it's like learning to ride a bike, or even, learning to read - something that once you learn, you never forget. I wonder if it would all come rushing back to me, that I'm just a bit rusty and after a polish-up, I'd be able to distinguish the crochets on the lines and interpret correctly. I don't know, I haven't tried. It's unfortunate that it's come to this, and while I'm sure my cognitive and cerebral development have vastly improved as a result of playing music in my younger years, it does make me wonder - seven years of learning, I can no longer read music, and I don't even hold the evidence to prove that I once could!? What was the point of those many weeks of misery...?
I reflect too much when I don't have much else to do.
I'd guess flute although I'd probably have to meet you to guess properly. There is a 'type' of person for different instruments, though, it's true! If you're really informed, you can look at the way somebody's embouchure (lip muscle) has developed and tell from that, although that obviously only helps for wind instruments.
ReplyDeleteI can sympathise, but not empathise. Unless I draw an analogy and admit that the last time I went swimming, I discovered that I'd forgotten how to do front crawl...
I would guess flute, and I had guessed that before I read lucy's comment! I played the flute, and now have forgotten how completely.
ReplyDeleteWon't be offended by any questions, honest, so ask away. I'll answer the ones you've already asked first though :)
xx
You seem intelligent, so definitely not bass guitar...
ReplyDeleteI'm guessing piano, because Lucy's already said flute.
Oh, and reflecting too much isnt a bad thing :-p
I too, oddly enough, thought flute, but the second instrument that came to mind was the french horn, for some completely abstract reason!
ReplyDeleteThen again, you said you'd tried three. As such, my uneducated guesses are as follows:
1. Flute
2. Saxophone
3. French horn =P
I know what you mean about losing instrumental skill though. I too played an instrument once, (two actually) an even though I wasn;t much good I feel the loss of that knowledge, and wonder whether I could manage to teach myself up again. We live in hope...
I like how everyone (bar Dickie) has gone for wind instruments!
ReplyDeleteIf we are right, of course, my explanation of the word 'embouchure' suddenly feels a bit patronising... Sorry!
Heh, French horn.
ReplyDelete*giggles*
(Maybe I haven't grown up, after all...)
Flute was my intial thought. It's funny how we've all gone for that I wonder what that could mean...
ReplyDeleteThen I thought pehaps Oboe, seeing as you like to do your *own* thing and flute might be following the trend too much. But then we're not talking about the Flix now are we, so perhaps it was the piano as Dickie suggested...but then I read the "I don't know B from F#; I wouldn't be able to tell the key; I doubt I could even place my hands appropriately" part and on a piano it is pretty simple so I'm thinking something more Oboe-ish.
Yeh, I'll go for that, the Oboe.
:oD xx
Most interesting...
ReplyDeleteI can tell you now, that none of you guessed correctly. Although, can I say I'm glad you thought of me as flautist? I dunno, to me, flute seems more delicate and elegant, even if that's not what you thought when you suggested it!
You could have another guess if you like, or simply click here to find the right answer.
As for the other two instruments, this was the obvious pre-cursor to the above, and this was one I dabbled with for a bit before giving up.
[My first attempt at hyperlinks! I thought I'd disguise in case I happened to have any other reader who wanted to have a guess :oP]
Any further thoughts upon discovering the truth...?
:-)
ReplyDeleteAlso my principal instrument, along with voice! And I too dabbled in the other two, although I never had proper lessons for the one and dropped the other at age eleven due to not getting on with the teacher. In retrospect, I wish that I had just changed teachers...
*makes note to get instrument out of case*
I was close with my Oboe :oD in a way.
ReplyDelete@ Hannah: I did think that - if there was a prize for the closest, you'd get it (though you do know me the mostest, and I thought I've mentioned it before somewhere? :oP)
ReplyDelete@ Lucy: I've met quite a few people who used to play the clarinet (...anyone who would have guessed will have already ;o) although I was never that into it myself, indeed, I would have had to google embouchure had you not said what it was! I have a feeling if I picked it up now, I'd be mouth numb and thumb indented before I'd even played a scale through! Incidently, I can't remember the any of the scales either (of the 1789338 that there were to recall) Oh dear, oh dear.
I can still play christmas carols on the recorder & part of chopsticks on the piano (least I think that's what it is) so all is not completely lost...
Damn, took the 'does her own thing' that hannah mentioned too far with the french horn...
ReplyDeleteShucks!
