Collecting Coins

Today, I have £1.88 in my purse.

Back in September or so and such a time, I began to collect the 2008 coat of arms coins. I didn't realise until the start of term that that is what they were, but since I discovered this, the race has been on to find a full set.

Just before the new year, I completed the mission. Score! I know I am weird; I am the kind of person who will pay for a twenty-two pee cup of tea in coppers to avoid 'breaking into' a five pence piece. In my purse, I have the seven english coins that I shall never spend, a canadian dime, an american quarter and a euro cent. A couple of sterling notes too, cos they're always handy, eh?

Here's a bit of lateral thinking for you: what's the maximum amount of coins you could have in your purse and not have exact change for a pound (not including £1 and £2 coins, obviously)? Answers welcome below...

  1. I can't think how you could have any more than 99 British coins, but seeing as you've said lateral thinking I'm assuming more than that. Are you allowed foreign coinage, or £5 coins or something?

  2. Hah, I tried to figure out for ages the best way to word the question, I guess I didn't explain too well. I mean the maximum value of money, rather than physical amount of coins.

Say if you had like, a fifty pence piece, and three twenty pence pieces, you'd have £1.10, yet wouldn't have the exact change for a pound... so what's the most amount of change you could have and still not have exact change for a pound?

  3. I've quickly worked it out at £1.39 (I won't say how yet, just in case someone else answers). That sound about right?

  4. (of course you could also happen to have some rare coins in your pocket, which might be more valuable than £1 - eg this. But that's just being picky, I guess :D)

  5. It sounds almost right...but not exactly right :P

I'm sure you'll be pleased to know this fits in with the first two guesses of most people (99p? Oh, you mean that..uh, £1.39?)

    Third time lucky? :D

(And yes it's just your regular British coins :D)
